Show creator and writer Alan Yang has been doing great content for television for a good number of years now. He had his hand in the now-classic comedy series Parks and Recreation, and more recently co-created the fantastic Netflix gem Master of None with its star Aziz Ansari. Now it looks like Yang is headed into the film world for the Netflix movie Tigertail, which he is set to write and direct for Netflix.
According to a report from Variety, Star Trek and The Exorcist star John Cho will be joining this production alongside Tzi Ma and Christine Ko. The film itself will be a multi-generational family drama based on events that happened to Yang’s own family, so it very much looks to be quite the personal tale. While the actual plot of the film isn’t quite clear, we did get some details from the outlet:
“The movie touches on themes of regret, longing, passion, and repression while spanning continents and generations, from 1950’s Taiwan to present-day New York City. Ma and Ko are the leads.”
With Netflix seemingly getting much pickier on their film front — supposedly set to focus on huge spectacles or awards contenders, I can’t help but think that this film will fall into the latter category. Yang and Ansari already won some awards for their work on Master of None, and if Tigertail retains a fraction of that sensibility, I think this could be quite the prestige project from the streaming giant.
