Things sure happen quickly over in Hollywood. It was only three months ago that Roseanne was at the top of the rating charts. In terms of TV revivals, its success was unquestionable, with each episode easily cracking 10 million views apiece — and some reaching as high as 18.4 million. With these solid ratings, along with the decent critical reception, another season was inevitable…but then those tweets happened.
The series lead, Roseanne Barr, made some racist, controversial tweets about former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett. That was all the network needed to cast her to the wayside, canceling the series on the spot. We now know that the characters will live on in their own spin-off, The Conners — well, most of the characters.

It was a given that Roseanne’s own character would not return, but how would they get rid of her? Co-star John Goodman recently spoke with The Sunday Times, and in their conversations, the outlet asked about what we can expect with his character, Goodman said the following:
“It’s an unknown. I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”
So there you have it. This is as good of a confirmation we’ll get for now that they do, in fact, plan on killing off Roseanne’s character. This is a bit ironic since the final episode of Season 9 all those years ago had ended with John Goodman’s character being revealed as dead, and the whole last season a wish fulfillment. Now, Goodman’s character will have to cope with the death of his own wife.
But you never know. Writers work fast on sitcom TV, so maybe they’ll find a way to give themselves an out. Given some time, they may end up forgiving Barr…maybe.
