A Quiet Place was one of those big surprise low-budget, high concept movies that hits every year. It was a really unique idea that allowed director John Krasinski to take full advantage of the film medium’s strengths. From its visual storytelling to its nuanced use of sound effects, it really does take full advantage of what makes films ticket.

With that in mind, the prospect of a sequel seemed very difficult. Could lightning actually strike twice, or would it only make it seem that much more derivative of what came before? Regardless, a second film is in the works…but what could it possibly be about? Could it be a sequel? Prequel? Or something else altogether? Star and wife to Krasinski, Emily Blunt, spoke with EW, and according to her, signs seem to be pointing at a direct sequel.

“In some ways, the idea of seeing who these people were before this all happened would be interesting, but I’m not quite sure because I think actually it’s now what’s the next chapter and what happens next. I think people feel very invested in this family…. I think it’s such an open book right now, and certainly for John who is lasering into something as we speak.”

Ironically enough, while the idea of what happens next for this family seems to be the way to go, it was a kernel of this idea that made Krasinski want to tackle the second movie, to begin with, as he said to the outlet.

“I had this very small idea, and what it was is that this is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake or a group of characters or a story. It’s actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience. It’s something we feel very lucky to have. It’s not like Alien or Jaws where the main villain is the thing you’re repeating; it’s an actual entire set of rules and the circumstance that the world has undergone that you can play in very different facets.”

I like the idea there, and while it seems like it could lead to us following different characters in this world, these same rules can be applied to this family, and how they continue to deal as things change and evolve.
