Emily (Aubrey Plaza, “Safety Not Guaranteed”) is saddled with student debt and locked out of the job market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi, “True Story”). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together, they hatch a plan to bring their business to the next level in Los Angeles.
The young filmmaker attended the University of South Carolina and has a MFA from the American Film Institute. He presented the sam short film he used as a thesis, Patrol at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Shortly after he started working on scripts for Disney, Universal and Sony. Ford is part of the Writer’s Guild.
Gig Patta spoke to the creator of Emily The Criminal, John Patton Ford via Zoom to discuss the making of the film. Ford opened up to his personal experience that inspired him to write and direct this story. In addition to some of the gadgets used that open awareness to the easy access for falsification and more!
