Joker Actress, Zazie Beetz, Skeptical Of Joker Sequel And We Should Be Too

DC is known for their constant hit or miss films, but clearly Joker will go down as one of their most successful hits. This is solidified by the amount of Oscar nominations and wins. Positive critical reviews and immediate box office success quickly brought the typical question: “What about a sequel?”

The sequel is a difficult beast to tackle. The original film clearly set extremely high expectations of any possible follow-up. The realistic grounding of the Todd Phillips film created an origin story for a character whose intrigue usually stems from the lack of an origin. So, now that they nailed the concept can it be replicated? Some films have struggled with being pushed too quickly just to get them out and have resulted in drastic failures (Justice League).

Joker actress, Zazie Beetz, spoke to MTV on the red carpet at The Oscars and revealed her thoughts regarding a sequel:

I have to say that I definitely agree with her. The film can stand on its own and originally intended to do so. Sure it opened the potential for a sequel, and if it is decided that one should be made it needs to have Phillips on board.  I don’t think a sequel should be made just for the sake of having one. The possibility of a sequel should be contingent on the intent. Is it to recoup more success off of the first film or is it to tell a good, connected story? If it is merely to try and ride the coattails of the first then it more than likely won’t be successful.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with Beetz? Should the film stand on its own or should there be a sequel? If so, why should there be one? What would you like to see in a follow-up? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
