Joker Breaks Records With $96M North American Bow And $247M Worldwide Haul

Joker: Folie À Deux

Ho. Lee. Heck. Going into the weekend, Joker projections were already being broken. Originally, this was a movie that was expected to hit somewhere in the neighborhoods of $75 million domestically, and it was later amended to around $80 million to $95 million — with $155 million worldwide as the big, bold number to get plastered across numerous headlines (including our own).

However, on the heels of the controversy and generally solid reception (including a B+ CinemaScore), the film took in $96 million domestically and (wait for it…oh, wait it’s in the title) $247 million worldwide.

That’s right. It nearly made $100 million more worldwide than was anticipated. I think it’s safe to say that this movie has exceeded all expectations, and with its reported $55 million budget, this thing will be laughing all the way to the bank, no doubt paving the way for more director-focused standalone DC films — which I’m all for, by the way.

Needless to say, this haul bests last year’s Venom, which took in a ridiculous $80.3 million domestically in its opening October weekend. Given the fact that it’s a serious R-rated movie…that’s all the more surprising.
