In my eyes, the most interesting DC film coming out in the near future (sorry, Shazam!) is Joker, the impending standalone feature from director Todd Phillips. The movie stars thespian Joaquin Phoenix and is set to take place outside of the DC Extended Universe. Given its separation from everything we’ve seen so far and its villain focus, you can bet we’ve had our eye on it.
Perhaps what’s most exciting about it is that we really don’t know what to expect. Hell, we had no idea whether or not even would even have a Bruce Wayne, and if so, what age he’d be. Now, thanks to ComicBook.com, we have an answer to that question along with an answer to another.

The outlet states that young actor Dante Pereira-Olson, who was recently seen along with Phoenix in the thriller You Were Never Really Here, has locked down the role of young Bruce Wayne. So if you held out hope that Batman would be a contemporary of the Joker at this time, get ready to hang up those hopes. But, of course, you can’t have a young Bruce Wayne without an Alfred, can you? They also confirmed that Douglas Hodge, who was seen in AMC’s The Night Manager, is the esteemed butler of Wayne manor.
The duo will be joining a cast that consists of Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Personally, I know little about these actors, but the real reveal here to me is the mere presence of these characters. How will they be incorporated into the plot in a meaningful way? Will their roles be relegated to fanservice? I certainly hope not. We already have Gotham on TV, so whatever this is, I want it to blow my socks off. Work your magic, Phillips.
Joker hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
