Joker: Is Director Todd Phillips Teasing The Film’s Production Start?

Ready or not, here it comes!

It looks like the upcoming Joker standalone film is underway — at least based on a recent Instagram post from the film’s director, Todd Phillips.

The image shows Phillips in a cloud of smoke with the caption “here we go.” Given that we know he is approaching production for Joker, it seems easy to infer that’s exactly what he’s talking about. This is despite the fact that September 10 has been pegged as the start date for the film, so it looks like they started a week early.

RELATED – Alec Baldwin No Longer Doing Joker

Last week was one hell of a week for Joker. Unlike every other DC film in the works, this one will actually be taking place outside of the established universe, and will be the first film in a more mature label of movies. But, of course, no film emerges from the pit of development and casting without a few bumps and bruises, and one such bump came in the form of Alec Baldwin.

Last week, it was reported that Baldwin would be starring as Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s dad in the film. However, less than 24 hours later, Baldwin himself stated he was no longer doing that film. While this may seem like it doesn’t bode well for the movie, the reality is that Baldwin could have exited the project six months ago for all we know.

So, as it stands, they likely already have their replacement in-hand, and I can hardly wait to see how this movie turns out. More than any other DC film in production, this one looks to be quite the unique beast — especially with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role.
