Joker: What The Hell Is Up With This Outtake With Phoenix Cussing Out The Cinematographer?

Making a movie is stressful. Hell, I’ll go one step further. People are stressful. You can be great friends with someone, but throw a handful of them in a room together, have them sit there for 12 hours under intense working conditions and heat, all the while trying to accomplish separate jobs, and you have a recipe for conflict at one point or another.

We’ve seen this culminate on the set of such films as Terminator Salvation, where Christian Bale famously yelled at the cinematographer, and now we have a similar situation where Joaquin Phoenix apparently yelled at the cinematographer as well, who was apparently whispering while Phoenix was acting.

The clip was revealed on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, with Phoenix becoming visually embarrassed by the clip being shown.

Check out the clip below!

It honestly plays off as an awkward “gotcha moment” on Jimmy Kimmel’s part. We also see some insight into some insecurities Phoenix may have had on set, and from the sound of it, rumors had gone around on set, with some crew calling him Cher as an insult. Phoenix looked very much embarrassed by it, and it makes you wonder why this was even necessary. Phoenix explained it as such.

“Sometimes movies get intense. You have a lot of people in a small space and you’re trying to find something. That was supposed to be private, I’m a little embarrassed by that. I’m sorry you guys had to see that…. I should probably publicly apologize to Larry.”

He turns to apologize to Larry publicly, but when he turned to apologize, he couldn’t quite follow through.

“Larry…The thing is though, I am sorry, but he did whisper constantly while we’re trying to work, and sometimes it’s really hard to find the emotion that you’re after, so it was wrong of me and I’m sorry, but he shouldn’t have done it.”

What did you think of the clip and the “apology” from Phoenix? Was this a weird moment of a director (Phillips, who sent the clip) messing with an actor, or is this Phoenix playing into it, just has he played into his weirdness years ago in his infamous David Letterman interview? Let us know your guesses down below!
