According to a new report by Discussing Film, No Way Home director Jon Watts in talks to direct rumored Star Wars High Republic show. If you’ve not been following the rumors on this, let me fill you in.
There’s a unnamed Star Wars show shooting this summer in Manhattan Beach. We have that much confirmed from Production Weekly. However according to our sources, we are saying this show, working title Grammar Rodeo, is the High Republic project with a young cast. Not to discount any other insiders because Jordan Maison of Cinelinx has been leading this rumor from the start. We’ve been playing catch up to Jordan, and Bespin Bulletin has been involved also.
Given that this does seem to be starring a younger cast, as per casting calls from The Illuminerdi, (below) it seems like Jon Watts would be an obvious and excellent pick. The outlet isn’t sure if this is talks to direct 1-2 episodes, or the whole show? We also know that in talks does not always equate to being signed on. Watts was already announced as the director on the Fantastic Four movie coming soon. We don’t as yet have a date for Fantastic Four. Therefore perhaps Watts is available this Summer? Then again, maybe he need a break or has another project lined up we don’t know about?

As always, until any of this is made official, especially when someone is just in talks, keep a dose of salt handy. There could easily be complications that prevent Watts talks continuing. However for now, Watts seems like a favorite choice for Lucasfilm to direct their Star Wars High republic show. My guess is that this show will be named and dated around Star Wars Celebration at the end of May or before hand on May 4th. Until then any and all information is rumors until the cameras begin rolling.
