Peele co-wrote and produced the film, which is a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 original Candyman film starring Tony Todd. This adaptation, set in the present day, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, HBO’s Watchmen), Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk, Dear White People), Colman Domingo (Selma, AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead), and Rebecca Spence (Man Of Steel, One Small Hitch). While Todd is in the film, we don’t know if he is reprising his role as Candyman/Daniel Robitaille. IMDb currently has him cast as “Stix.”
The talented Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, Top Boy) will be helming the director’s chair for the project.

Judging by the description of this sequel, it seems this production is taking the same approach that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green took when they crafted their 2018 Halloween film. McBride and Green bypassed all the sequels in existence and developed a follow-up directly connected to the 1978 John Carpenter classic. That approach proved successful as the film was a massive box office success and currently has two sequels in production. Like McBride and Green, it seems like Peele and co-writer and Win Rosenfeld (producer of BlacKkKlansmen and Lorena) are only using the original film and nothing that was released after.
The original Candyman terrified this writer as a young boy. Half the reason was how perfect Tony Todd was as the character. Peele has proven with Get Out and Us that he is more than qualified to create his own chapter in this frightening series. This summer, we’ll all get to experience this updated vision of a ’90s horror cult favorite.
Candyman hits theaters June 12.
