It’s a joy to the world that the Tabernacle Choir is returning to the screen with its beautiful music.

For this holiday season, actress Lesley Nicol (Downtown Abbey) and Broadway actor Michael Maliakel (Disney’s Aladdin) join the celebration with a choir cast of over 500 people for Joy: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir.

The cast sings many Christmas classics, including “Joy to the World,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

In one segment, Maliakel sings “God Help the Outcasts” from the musical and film The Hunchback of Notre Dame based on the Victor Hugo novel. Nicol retells the true story of Hugo and his wife hosting a Christmas dinner for impoverished children, with actors and dancers bringing the story to life in period costumes.

Joy: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir continues its tradition of featuring Lea Salonga, Angela Lansbury, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Gladys Knight, Sutton Foster, Richard Thomas, and Jane Seymour for the past two decades.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta attended the virtual press event, which featured Lesley Nicol, Michael Maliakel, and the music director of The Tabernacle Choir, Mack Wilberg, to discuss their spectacular production.

Joy: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir premieres Tuesday, December 17, at 8 p.m. ET and then repeats on Tuesday, December 24, at 9:30 p.m. on PBS. It streams on PBS.org and the PBS App from November 28 through January 1st. BYUtv will air it on Thursday, December 19, at 9 p.m. ET and repeats through Christmas Day. The special will also stream for free on the BYUtv app and BYUtv.org.
