Doctor Who and Marvel star Karen Gillan has been cast in the role of Heather in the Henry Cavill starring Highlander reboot. If we use the original film as a reference, then Heather is Connor’s first wife back in Scotland, during the period Connor trains with Ramirez (Russell Crowe). In the original, the love story of Connor and Heather, which ends with Heather’s death from old age to a still young Connor, was the real emotional centre. Thereby, leaving the modern day Connor reluctant to fall for Brenda.
Gillan who played Amy Pond during the Matt Smith Doctor Who era became most famous covered in prosthetics playing Nebula in the MCU. Gillan joins the aforementioned Cavill and Crowe and joining them as the villainous Kurgen is Dave Bautista.

‘Karen Gillan has joined the sword-swinging cast of Highlander, Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic.’
‘Henry Cavill is leading the cast that includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Marisa Abela.’
I had not heard of Abela’s casting before reading this article from the trade.
‘In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez. Bautista is the savage warrior named The Kurgen while Industry actress Marisa Abela also has a leading role.’
‘Gillan will play Heather, MacLeod’s mortal wife and the love of his life.’

Can we assume Abela is therefore playing the only missing character from the original, the Brenda/modern love interest? It’s possible there will be bigger roles for other characters in this remake/reboot than there were the original. Still, the Brenda role is my guess for Abela.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen Gillan in more big films recently since her starring roles in Guardians/Avengers and the Jumanji films. Principal Photography on the Highlander reboot is set to begin at the end of September.
