Karl Urban In Talks To Appear In Judge Dredd TV Show

A few years back, Karl Urban starred in the action film, Dredd, which was based on the comic Judge Dredd. Of course, most people who are familiar with the property were likely introduced by Sylvester Stallone’s Judge Dredd flick — a not so good adaptation that likely soured the milk for the Karl Urban movie. Urban’s take on the character was damn near perfect, and the movie itself a huge surprise, but sadly the box office didn’t respond, and it wasn’t until the flick made the home release rounds that most audiences took notice.

Ever since then, there’s been rumblings of a sequel. Sure, audiences didn’t come out, but like some TV shows that flopped in their season runs, but flourished in syndication (allowing them to come back to TV in a big way), Dredd’s home release performance has at least opened up conversations of ways for this thing to survive. While another film doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards, last May, it was announced that a live-action show, Judge Dredd: Mega City One was in the works, but it wasn’t clear whether or not Urban would be back.

Speaking at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention (via ComicBook.com), Urban revealed that he was in talks to appear. Here’s what he had to say:

“I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”

I have to say, that would be amazing if we could see Urban return as Dredd to the small screen, though this does make me wonder what their current approach is to the story. Do they plan on making it a Dredd-focused story, or one that simply focuses on the world? It almost sounds like Urban is discussing more of an “appearance” of the character than an actual starring role, which would be disappointing.

While I wouldn’t necessarily be against seeing Dredd in a minimized role (for the sake of letting Urban back into the fold), I would find it strange to have a show named after him, only to have him barely in it.
