Constantine is returning back to the big screen. The twist is that it’s not based on the project that J.J. Abrams was working on with Justice League Dark, and it’s not the very beloved Matt Ryan, who has played the character in a few TV series and voiced his character in a few animated features as well. It’s a return on the 2005 John Constantine, played by Keanu Reeves.
Serval media outlets including Variety confirm that Warner Bros. will be making a sequel to his first film supernatural action film, “Constantine”. The film will also be bringing back the original director Francis Lawrence. You may not know him from “Constantine” but you know him as the filmmaker that took over “Hunger Games” after the first film in the franchise.
It is also being reported that the “Justice League Dark” series from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions is not moving forward. Four scripts had already been written, and an actor was in early talks for the lead role. Also not moving forward is the “Madame X” series produced by Angela Robinson.
But there is some hope for these series. Sources say that both Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot remain very excited about these projects and are expecting to find new homes for both of them. With the recent success of The Sandman over on Netflix, maybe that would be a good place for them.

Variety also reports a few details about the project. Akiva Goldsman will write and produce through his production company Weed Road Pictures along with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella. Goldsman has been very busy over at Paramount+ helming a variety of Star Trek series that have been well received by fans.
It will be interesting to see this Constantine project develop. His character has really grown in popularity via several projects in film, TV, and comic books. Also, I’d be excited to see if maybe they can use that as a launching point for other Justice League Dark characters, maybe give Swamp Thing another shot? Or Zatanna?
