Ken Rodgers Discusses Al Davis and Pete Rozelle in ESPN Films’ Al Davis vs. The NFL [Exclusive interview]

Al Davis vs. The NFL
Ken Rodgers directed the ESPN documentary Al Davis vs. The NFL.

Two of the largest NFL personality juggernauts clashed for years.

The greatest rivalry between Raiders legendary owner Al Davis and former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle demonstrated the enduring public battles that lasted over three decades. Through their conflicts, the actions resulted in permanent changes to the popularity of American football and how it does business.

In the documentary from Ken Rodgers,  Al Davis vs. The NFL, the film explores in detail since the merger of the AFL and NFL that sparked this interchange between the football giants. With the passing of both football greats, the documentary proceeded with the narrative through old footages and deep fake narratives.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The film traces the relationship from their early clashes in the AFL/NFL wars of the 1960s through their tacit reconciliation upon Rozelle’s retirement in 1989, with a special emphasis on the antitrust lawsuit Al Davis filed against the NFL in 1980. Davis wanted to relocate his legendary team from Oakland to Los Angeles, in pursuit of a state-of-the-art stadium, but the league would not approve. Today, with the Raiders recently completing their inaugural season in Las Vegas in a brand new stadium, something Davis always dreamed of building himself, the film presents the adversarial relationship between the two visionaries.

The film made its premiere on ESPN. It is now available on the ESPN+ as a part of its 30 for 30 libraries.
