Kevin Feige Praises Director Chloe Zhao’s Vision For Eternals

Eternals should really be on our doorstep in a non-COVID world. Alas, we are, and it’s not. So when Kevin Feige praises director Chloe Zhao’s vision for Eternals, it feels like a long way till February 2021. That is the earliest date we will see Eternals, and who knows, perhaps there could be further delays to come?

Zhao, like many Marvel Studios directors before her, has never worked on a movie this size before. However, it was Zhao’s vision for Eternals which helped Feige to decide to push ahead with the movie. In THR‘s latest story covering Zhao’s upcoming movie Nomadland, they also managed to get into Zhao’s work with Marvel Studios.

“Her initial pitch to us was fascinating,” says Feige. “And frankly one of the reasons we moved forward on the movie was because of the vision that she brought to it.”

As for what that vision might entail, Zhao did offer a few clues.

“I have such deep, strong, manga roots,” says Zhao. “I brought some of that into Eternals. And I look forward to pushing more of that marriage of East and West. How much further and bigger can we go after Avengers: Endgame?” asks Zhao. “Because I’m not just making the film as a director. I’m making the film as a fan.”

How much bigger can they go than Endgame? Well I think Zhao is talking thematically here as opposed to how popular Eternals can be. Eternals has a huge ensemble cast, and it sounds as if  Zhao was happy she got to shoot the movie the way she envisioned.

“I shot exactly the way I wanted to shoot,” she says. “On location. A lot of magic hour. Three-hundred-sixty degrees on the same camera as I did on Nomadland. Same rigs. It’s a bit surreal. I’m still waiting for the shoe to drop. It hasn’t. I think I got lucky in that Marvel wants to take risks and do something different.”

The comments about taking risks with Eternals and how ambitious the movie will be have always intrigued me. I’ve said many times that Eternals might not be the Marvel movie I anticipate the most. It is however, the movie that perhaps intrigues me most with pure curiosity. Thor: Love and Thunder, due to liking Waititi’s style on Ragnarok is likely the Phase 4 movie I am most excited for. I would also say Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sounds like the most fun outside of Thor. However, in terms of pure curiosity I guess my mind goes to both the Doctor Strange sequel and even more so Eternals.

I really don’t know what to expect from Eternals, and that’s cool. I am happy that we do get will definitely be representative of the initial vision Zhao had. Though, whether I will connect with Zhao’s vision remains to be seen? What do you think of his comments as Kevin Feige praises director Chloe Zhao’s vision for Eternals?
