Kevin Smith On Martin Scorsese: It’s Not The ‘Super’ Part We Relate To

Oh, boy. I’m sure when Martin Scorsese offhandedly dismissed the idea of comic book movies, he didn’t expect the backlash it’s gotten in fan communities online. Of course, as I stated back in my original piece, I think it was a stupid and uninformed statement, and while other people have said similar things in the past, the fact that Scorsese has directed so many classics has really lent a sad sort of weight to the statement.

It was only a matter of time that Kevin Smith would have something to say. Regarding all things in Hollywood, Smith is rarely one to remain quiet, and as he is one of us fans (and one of comic book fans’ biggest allies), I eagerly awaited his comments. And he didn’t disappoint.

Speaking with Yahoo!, Smith gave a pretty levelheaded statement.

“Martin Scorsese probably doesn’t have the emotional attachment to those movies that I do. When he sees those movies, he’s like, ‘That’s a theme park.’ When I see those movies, that is the closest I get to being with my dad at a movie theater again. I respect his opinion, but I don’t think he has the same emotional attachment that a lot of us have. It’s the men and the women that we relate to in the movie, not the ‘super’ part.

“Martin Scorsese has made such wonderful movies. He’s been doing the job since I was a kid. I’m not going to sit and be like, ‘I know better than him.’ That’s his feelings. I would say this, and I’m not countering Mr. Scorsese: Martin Scorsese made perhaps the biggest superhero movie ever made.”

The film in question is The Last Temptation of Christ, which is interesting, because that was the same film James Gunn referenced when he made comparisons between what Scorsese said about comic book movies to the things people said about The Last Temptation of Christ without actually seeing the movie.
