Kevin Smith Reveals Shocking Original Ending To Joker

Joker's Todd Phillips Courted For Larger DC Role By New WB/D Boss Zaslav

It may have taken a while, but DC and Warner Bros. have finally seemed to hit their stride with their comic book movies. Sure, we had decades of great films, but in a modern sense, it took them quite a while for their movies to really resonate with fans and critics alike, and a lot of it has to do with them allowing directors to have free rein with the characters. One such film that epitomizes that is Joker from Todd Phillips.

With Joker, we got a dark, gritty crime character study that was at odds with a lot of mainstream comic book movies that currently populate theaters. The film itself ended with Joker at Arkham, and him running around the corridors, leaving bloodied footprints behind. But, it sounds like that wasn’t the original ending.

While speaking on Fat Man Beyond, Kevin Smith gave a new ending from what he claims is a credible source.

“Maybe this is completely wrong, but I hope it’s true. Originally, the movie was supposed to end with [Joker] in that [hospital room, but] that ending in the hospital was different…Who knows if it was just in script, but here it goes. So, he’s in the hospital and he laughs, and the lady goes, ‘what’s so funny?’ and he goes, ‘I was just thinking of something funny.’

“What was supposed to happen was you flashed back to the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, and it was him killing Thomas and Martha Wayne, and the boy was screaming and crying, and he turned to walk away, then he turned back, shrugged, and shot the kid. Credits. What the f**k, man! Could you imagine? That’s literally the biggest f**k you to the audience that, ‘this world has no Batman, just f**kin’ Jokers.’”

All I can say is…damn. I really wish the filmmakers were allowed to go through with this ending. As of this writing, a sequel seems inevitable, so perhaps Warner Bros. so the potential for a path forward and didn’t want to write themselves in a corner.

That being said, I do think that there are plenty of paths forward in a world without Batman, but that’s just me. What do you think of this original ending? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! You can listen to the episode down below, and his story about Joker starts around 18:00 in.
