Clerks director Kevin Smith has inked a deal with Saban to acquire the North American rights for a theatrical release of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The film is a direct sequel to the 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He announced the recent deal on Twitter. The full post is below.
SNOOGANS! To celebrate my 25th anniversary at Sundance, I’m pleased as a pot-head to announce that the good folks at SABAN and UNIVERSAL have given the green light to #JayAndSilentBobReboot! @JayMewes and I start shooting on 2/25 (the one year anniversary of my heart attack)! https://t.co/fFTO9AFZbk

Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith will reprise their roles of Jay and Silent Bob. The characters were introduced to audiences 25 years ago in Smith’s first film, Clerks. They returned as Jay and Silent Bob in several more films all connected by The View Askewniverse, a universe connecting Smith’s projects in film, tv, and other media. Think of it as sort of an early Marvel Universe where characters in one film would refer to a character in another. Jay and Silent Bob made appearances in several films contained in The View Askewniverse including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II.

Saban’s president Bill Bromiley has said of the recent deal:
“Partnering with Kevin at script stage on the next chapter of these iconic characters is a huge milestone. This is the beginning of a new initiative at Saban Films, to partner on IP with seasoned filmmakers and talent early on in the creative process all the way through distribution.”
This is great win for Smith who suffered a massive heart attack in February 2018. Smith said:
“Last February, I almost died. So on the one year anniversary of my widow maker heart attack, as a celebration of life and a big ol’ F you to Death, my best friend and I will be rolling cameras on a sequel/remake/reboot of a movie we first made nearly twenty years ago! In Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back our herbal heroes found out Hollywood was making a movie based on them, so they journeyed out to Hollywood to stop it.”
It sounds like these two stoner characters will be taking us along for a possible road trip. This is joyous news if you are a fan of Smith’s work. I am very much looking forward to seeing Jay and Silent Bob Reboot when it releases. One of my favorite bits involving Jay and Silent Bob is from the 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It involved Jay and Silent Bob being taught by the late comedian George Carlin on the first rule in the unwritten book of the road. As of this writing, no release date has been set. Stay tuned for further news.
