Kong, Metal Gear Solid Director Gives Thoughts On What A Zelda Film Should Be

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a huge geek. Check out any interview of the dude for Kong: Skull Island, and it’s clear he has a huge love for the properties he’s taken on. One big project on the horizon is a film based on the video game Metal Gear Solid. It’s one fans have been waiting for for decades, and one that’s based on a game that’s become increasingly cinematic since the PS1 classic of the same name.

While that’s quite the big property for ANYONE to take on, it’s not the only one Vogt-Roberts has his eyes on. When asked what he would do with The Legend of Zelda if given the opportunity, he gave his two cents on how he’d approach such a gargantuan task:

“The thing about Zelda is Zelda is not Lord of the Rings, right? You cannot forget how quirky and bizarre Zelda is. I think you need to find a way to actually fuse the traditional Zelda and the very new Zelda.”

“I think you have to find a way to very intensely fuse the pure just sort of fantasy of The Ocarina of Time and The Link to the Past, but then I think you need to find a way to incorporate the newer pseudo-tech stuff — you know, the lasers and Tron lines that happen in the newer games, but in a way that’s not overwhelming.”

Vogt-Roberts has a solid point here. It’s easy to see Zelda as just another high fantasy series, but the fact is there is plenty of technology infused in later entries, and we also can’t ignore the intense Japanese flavor they’ve injected into it in recent years. It takes a certain type of filmmaker who understands that this isn’t a Lord of the Rings film, and the fact that Vogt-Roberts understands that really puts him up there as a helmer I’d like to see take this on.
