DC’s greatest live-action television series has been canceled since 2015, yet the character at its center continues to live on. I am, of course, referring to Constantine, the NBC series that ran for only one season ending with a cliffhanger never-the-less. Constantine was great because certain episodes, including “A Feast of Friends”, were incredibly true to specific storylines from the Hellblazer comic, with the show never shying away from the horror elements of John Constantine’s world. The show’s greatest strength, however, was the casting of Matt Ryan as Constantine, which remains among the most accurate casting for a superhero adaptation in any medium.
Ryan was so good that he’s been brought back to conquer the role several times. First, Ryan donned the ratty jacket and tie again in the episode of Arrow titled Haunted, before voicing the character in DC’s best animated feature, 2017’s Justice League Dark. Ryan will also return as Constantine in the announced animated series that will air on CW Seed. Now, it sounds like we may be seeing everyone’s favorite wise-ass before even his own animated series.
IGN reports that the villains of Legends of Tomorrow‘s third season will have a magical and occult focus in Season 3 of the show. Damian Darhk is set to be a featured antagonist for the season, and he will be joined by Gorilla Grodd. They are both said to be part of a larger, magic-oriented group lead by a “non-human entity.” Showrunner Phil Klemmer said:
“This is a non-human entity. This is a much more supernatural, spooky vibe this season. We’re dealing more with magic. It’s less real-world bad guys.”
IGN continues to say that due to this magical threat, the showrunners are, “campaigning for Matt Ryan’s Constantine to appear.” This is some of the best comic book news ever! If only this announcement was about using Ryan for the live-action feature DC Extended Universe version of Justice League Dark…

It is reaffirming, as a Matt Ryan fan, that he keeps getting cast as John Constantine across DC’s shows and animated movies. It is proof positive that he has nailed the role, and maybe, just maybe, he’ll be considered for the big screen version as well. Though I won’t get my hopes up.
