You only need to look at the pilot episode of Legion to know that Noah Hawley isn’t exactly a traditional storyteller. He took what could have been a fairly traditional story, and went with a truly psychedelic route, full of confusing imagery, unique production design, and a dark, off-the-wall story. One could only imagine what the guy could do if given a Marvel Studios property to work with.

Well, it sounds like Marvel Studios is ahead of us. While it doesn’t sound like there’s anything in active development, he did give THR some insight as to some of the conversations he’s had with the studio. Here’s what he said:

“I did sit down with [Marvel Studios’ president] Kevin Feige recently and I said that I look at myself as sort of the Marvel R&D department. I know the genre can do all of these amazing things that [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] is doing, but my feeling is, what else can we do with it? Can we make it surreal? Can we make it musical? Not as a gimmick, but all of these techniques are about putting you into the subjective experience of these characters.”

Damn. Part of me wonders what he could do with a Doctor Strange movie. Maybe have the guy go up against Dracula? I’d watch that movie in a heartbeat. We do know that Hawley may still be able to direct a Doctor Doom film, but in a world where the MCU is still the MCU, I’m not sure how possible that is.

Or maybe we could get a situation where Marvel allows certain filmmakers to create Joker-like projects under the Fox banner? I’m making a lot of inferences here, but given the current state of Disney and Fox, it’s hard to believe that such things haven’t at least been considered. Regardless, I am excited to hear another filmmaker out there looking to push our expectations with the genre. What do you think of Hawley’s comments? Let us know your thoughts down below!
