To watch one live with dementia is truly a hardship for friends and family.
Journalist Max Lugavere with director Chris Newhard, decided to record Max’s interactions with his mother, Kathy Lugavere, as she slowly struggles with dementia in this emotional and touching documentary Little Empty Boxes.
Here is the official synopsis:
Once a strong and independent woman, Kathy Lugavere finds herself struggling with her memory. In a quest to find his mother the best care, 32-year-old Max moves home to New York City and begins to consult with top health experts to investigate the origins of Dementia, a disease which now affects a staggering 55 million people globally. The deeply personal film chronicles Kathy’s experience with Dementia as Max explores methods outside of prescription medication to slow her illness down. Little Empty Boxes presents a raw perspective of Kathy’s journey, the hardships of being a caretaker, and a son willing to do anything to save his mother.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with journalist/director Max Lugavere with director Chris Newhard on following the moments with Max and Kathy, science behind dementia, and the remembrance of Kathy.
Max Lugavere is an author who wrote about diet and brain health. From 2005 to 2011, he was a presenter on Current TV, an independent cable network. He hosted a current events show Max and Jason: Still Up with Jason Silva.
Chris Newhard is a filmmaker based in Philadelphia. He is the founder of Booklight, a production company focused on documentary and narrative space.
Little Empty Boxes released theatrically in New York City on April 19 and then in Los Angeles on April 26.
