Live-Action Aladdin Songwriters Reveal Details About New Songs

Disney’s live-action animated films have been making bank at the box-office, with both The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast being runaway successes for the studio, but there is no single method being utilized for adapting each film. The Jungle Book, on one hand, only utilized two of the songs from the animated film, and ended up a very different movie from its inspiration. Beauty and the Beast, on the other hand, went full-on musical, taking every song from the animated classic and adding a couple more for good measure.

With that in mind, it’s not always easy to know what approach the upcoming live-action adaptations will be taking. It’s with that question in mind that we come to the latest news for Aladdin, yet another film on Disney’s slate. We’ve known for some time that the movie would feature songs from the La La Land and The Greatest Showman songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (in addition to the returning Alan Menken), but how many new songs would there be?

The duo spoke with Variety, and in their conversations, they have revealed a few big details, starting with a new song for Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott.

“We got to write a new song for Jasmine,” Paul told the outlet. “Alan wrote a beautiful piece of music and [Scott] is incredible.”

So that’s one new song. But they also wrote a duet for Aladdin and Jasmine that Paul describes as “sweet.” Will they be using this in place of “A Whole New World” or is it an additional duet? We’ll have to wait and see.

Finally, they revealed that they will be using “Arabian Nights” in the movie, but that they have a new verse for it — though if this new verse will be used in place of the old verses or in addition to is still unknown.

So, as it stands, it looks like there are at least two brand-new songs. Given their statements, it sounds like this one will skew much closer to Beauty and the Beast in its approach, which isn’t a bad thing.
