Local Conventions Are A Great Place To Be | GalaxyCon 2019

Last weekend I was privileged to attend Richmond, VA’s GalaxyCon 2019 as a member of the press. Since this was a medium-sized convention, usually around 15-16k visitors a year, there was no press room for interviews or scheduled celebrity press time in general. This meant I was able to roam the exhibit hall floor and the panels just like a regular fan, only I got to hit the floor before opening, take more pictures, and gave celebrities more incentive to speak with me. This was my first local convention as I have only been to the San Diego and NYC cons and only as a fan. It was a great experience filled with every bit as much dedication, fandom, and cool costumes as the big guys.

Besides the fact that your local con is, well, local there are plenty of other benefits. The biggest being the smaller crowds. Smaller crowds mean a less crowded exhibit hall floor, easier access to celebrities, and a higher chance you’ll get to ask your question in a panel. I was able to get a seat for every panel I wanted too and had an easy time getting pictures and questions. No, my press pass didn’t really factor into this.

GalaxyCon 2019 had Power Rangers, The Doctor, pro wrestlers, Kel Mitchell, Alice Cooper, and so many more celebrities. Most of the celebrities were selling their autographs and pictures, but most would welcome a handshake or high-five at no cost. Comic book artists were always willing to sign a book for free or offer custom commissions for a premium. The Amazing Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley would even draw Spidey’s symbol on kids’ hands as they came by his booth.

Tabletop gaming and video games also played a role at GalaxyCon. There were free-play groups, tournaments for prizes, and of course stuff to buy. There were even costumed (like superhero and anime costumes)wrestling matches in a full-sized wrestling ring!

Your local convention offers the same, I promise! Even the smallest ones are going to offer you the chance to hang out with like-minded people and have a good time!
