Is a Final Fantasy XVI announcement on the way?

Prospective PlayStation 5 owners are in for a real treat this coming Wednesday. As was announced earlier in the day, Sony is putting on a showcase for the console. Many of us expect a lot more gameplay footage, game announcements, and all sorts of unexpected goodies. As the pending November release of PlayStation 5 nears, the hype slowly builds. With that in mind, you can bet there are already rumors surrounding what Sony will actually unveil. 

Now, the big rumor out there is that Final Fantasy XVI will get announced at the showcase. Before we delve into the evidence, it’s worth noting that this was rumored prior to the last showcase. Instead, however, the original I.P. Project Athia was announced — though I’m not convinced that couldn’t be Final Fantasy XVI itself. The point is, take this all with a grain of salt.

Anyway, the evidence in question is a newly-created Twitter account. Based on the name, it is speculated that it was created and locked in anticipation of the announcement. Of course, any Yahoo could create an account, but it is a bit suspect that it’s locked. Unless it was specifically created for the purpose of raising eyebrows by some rando, it being created by Square Enix is a good bet. But that’s not all!

The official Twitter announcement of the upcoming showcase was also retweeted by Shinji Hashimoto, who is the Final Fantasy brand manager and producer of certain entries (via DualShockers). Finally, there is the fact that pre-production on a new project was revealed to be done. Of course, the game could be anything, but it’s heavily rumored to be Final Fantasy XVI. 

I don’t know about you guys, but it’s been a long time since Final Fantasy has had a proper new entry (barring Final Fantasy VII Remake). I’m also thrilled to see what the franchise will look like in the next-generation of consoles.
