By this point, Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, and all-around Middle-Earth fans have collected roughly 17 different editions of these films. Despite the fact that the latest trilogy in the entire opus can’t hold a candle to the first, they tend to be worth the purchase by virtue of the special features alone. It’s because of that that I have no problem in reporting that Amazon has posted a listing for what they’re calling the Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition.
The eagle-eyed folks over at io9 were the first to report the existence of this listing, which contains a reported 30 discs. That’s right. Not one. Not two. But 30 discs, which accounts for five Blu-ray discs per film, which is staggering.
Here are the specifics from Amazon:
Middle-earth Limited Collector’s Edition (AMAZON/6-pack/BD) (BD)
– For the first time ever, Academy Award®-winning director Peter Jackson’s epic adventure is available in one spectacular limited collector’s edition box set.
– The Limited Collector’s Edition includes 30 discs featuring all six Middle-earth films in their extended edition forms, housed in six stunning faux leather books and a collectible Hobbit-style wood shelf. The one-of-a-kind wood shelf is crafted from solid wood with design selected by Peter Jackson.
– In addition to the extended edition release of every film, the collection also includes all previously released bonus content from both the theatrical and extended editions.
– Exclusive premiums designed for the collection include : · Spectacular 100-page sketch-style book with replica The Red Book of Westmarch, filled with original film sketches and new artwork · Original reproductions of exquisite watercolor paintings by acclaimed conceptual artists Alan Lee and John Howe, framable and wall-ready
As of this writing, it looks like the specs for the set are still being written or posted, as it only contains summaries for the first Hobbit and Lord of the Rings film, respectively. io9 also stated that when the listing was first up, the set was set at a whopping $800. We can’t be sure if that’ll end up being the final price, since it was taken down, but based on the photo above and the few details we do have, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’d be the asking price.
The Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition is set for a release date of October 4, 2016, but again, it remains to be seen if this will change.
