Lord of the Rings to restart filming soon.

Middle-earth is headed to the small screen. We have known this for what must be years at this point. It was famously the subject of a multi-hundred-million-dollar license acquisition of Amazon. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited seeing just what the studio could cook up. After all, Lord of the Rings will not be an adaptation of the trilogy of books, but of the greater Middle-earth mythology J.R.R. Tolkien created. 

Like many productions, it was negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the coronavirus, it was shut down mid-March after it wrapped its first two episodes, Deadline reports. Now, according to the same outlet, New Zealand has granted border exemptions for the productions, meaning it can begin very soon. More specifically, they hope to start up again this September.

Of course, all of this can change, but this does bode well for things to come. As a fan of Middle-earth, I can’t wait to see how this series turns out. 

Another series given the go-ahead is Cowboy Bebop. That one is a bit different in that it first went on hiatus when its star John Cho was injured on-set. His current status is unknown, but from the sound of it, he seems to be recovering well. If all goes according to plan, they should be returning to production “in the coming months.”

New Zealand is one of the countries that has managed to keep the COVID-19 coronavirus from its country thanks to border closures, s so these exemptions are a big deal. Here’s hoping this leads to more TV shows headed to production and minimal to no returns of the actual pandemic.
