LRM EXCLUSIVE – Spider-Man: Far From Home – One Mysterio Design Had Him Wearing A Spacesuit-Type Costume

If there was one takeaway from that first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer all those months ago, it was generally the overwhelmingly positive reaction fans had to the Mysterio costume. Growing up, seeing our heroes and villains on the big screen often involved a LOT of liberties being taken with the costumes — the famous example being the original X-Men film, where everyone was sporting a whole lotta turn-of-the-millennium, Matrix-style leather.

But Mysterio? That costume was about as comic book accurate as anyone could have ever expected…but how did director Jon Watts and co. actually settle on that design? Our own Gig Patta asked that very question of the filmmaker in a recent phone chat for the film. Here’s what the man had to say.

“Well, you know what. That was a very funny development process. That was the very first concept we did. Like, ‘What would it really look like if we were really true to form to the original design for Mysterio?’ And then we explored other ways of reinterpreting the suit and making that feel more modern, trying to make it feel more like a spacesuit, you know, since we were saying he was from a different dimension. At the end of the day, we just came all the way back around to the first design that was more true to the original design. That was Mysterio. There was no way around it.”

Given how amazing the suit looks, I think we can all agree they made the right choice. Not only does it still look pretty solid (like a mix between Doctor Strange and Iron Man), but it helped win the film a lot of kudos with fans.
