LRM Exclusive: Venom Director Says They Made No Compromises To Achieve PG-13 Rating

Many comic book movie fans were pretty dubious about the idea of a Venom film from Sony. Marvel Studios had done such a great job with integrating Spider-Man, and it only seemed natural that Venom would be brought into that same world. However, one silver lining in all this was that Sony would theoretically be able to go all-out on a Venom film.

By being produced outside of the Marvel Studios ecosystem, it means they’d be able to go full-R with this take, allowing fans to get a comic book-accurate version of the character. However, as was revealed weeks ago, the rating they received was a disappointing PG-13. This seemed to be an effort to ensure a potential future as part of the MCU was possible, but did they have to compromise to achieve it?

Our own Gig Patta spoke with Venom director Ruben Fleischer, and when asked, Fleischer went on to say that they made the film they’d wanted to from day one:

“We honestly always intended it to be what it was. I feel like we didn’t sacrifice anything in making it. We pushed the limits really far, and I don’t think that fans who want a murderous, ferocious, violent Venom will be disappointed. I feel like we really let him go wild. I don’t think it lacks anything. But what I love about it is that it allows all audiences to come out and see it. Some of the biggest fans of Venom are kids. He’s this forbidden fruit for especially younger boys. This character who can do whatever he wants and not have to listen, and be wild and ferocious, and so we wanted to make sure that all fans can come to the movie and not be excluded.”

In some ways, I can see his point. While I wasn’t exposed to the character around ages 10 to 13, if I was, he would be my favorite character ever, no questions asked. That being said, given Fleischer’s track record with R-rated fare, it’s hard for me not to be just a little bit disappointed.

But what do you think of his comments regarding the PG-13 rating? Does he have a point? Let us know down below!
