LRM’S Most Anticipated Films Of 2019 | A Breaking Geek Discussion

Welcome to Breaking Geek, a column where uber-geek Nick Doll offers commentary and reactions to the most interesting news of the week (or whatever he feels like), using his expansive knowledge of all things geek! Today I am joined by fellow LRM writers Kyle Malone of The Cantina and LRM Ranks, Cam Clark, Stephon White of I’d Buy That For A Dollar, and our #1 Reviewer, Fox Troilo! Today’s topic: The Most Anticipated Films Of 2019!

As 2018 finally draws to a close, and with too many films that need to be seen over Christmas to do a Best Film of the Year discussion, it is time to look forward to all the tasty treats Hollywood has to offer in 2019!

As expected, there superhero films galore, some animated Disney features, a Star Wars film, four Disney live-action remakes… and then films from other Studios including 20th Century Fox’s last year of films as its own studio.

So, what is the LRM crew excited to see the most at the Cinema in 2019? Let’s find out!

Doll: The obvious answer is Avengers: Endgame, which I am most excited for. But I don’t wanna’ do that! Instead, there is another superhero film I want to highlight, and it ain’t based on a comic book.

Glass. I can’t wait to see the triumphant return of David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) after what will be an 18 year absence from the big screen since Unbreakable’s release in 2001 (Willis’ cameo in Split doesn’t really count as a “triumphant return…”). Finally, we will see what followed what was essentially a film that was all origin story, only revealing Mr. Glass’s super-villainy plot at the end of the film, finally setting up the two men as superhero and supervillain.

M. Night Shyamalan has had his weak streak, and his films are still a risk, but I really hope he can pay off his best film in a big way, all these years later. The addition of The Beast (James McAvoy) into the narrative gives Mr. Glass a big advantage against Dunn, but the hero always wins… right?

Kyle: Is 2018 really over already? Well, what a year in film we had… There was the incredible Infinity War, and that other great film Infinity War and let’s not forget the fact we got Infinity War. So that means next year we’ll all be talking Endgame right? Well, likely, but I am really looking forward to Spider-Man: Far From Home too. I have been a huge fan of Tom Holland’s Spidey/Peter Parker since he first appeared in Civil War, and this movie will have one of my favorite villains of his, Mysterio.

This movie has the opportunity to increase the banter and quips between hero and villain. That was always one of my favorite things about Mysterio, he was goofy, had a silly costume, failed a lot, and that gave Spidey a lot of ammo. I think this movie can be funnier than the last one, hopefully with a lot of humor coming as Spider-Man, and yet give us an opportunity to connect with Peter on a deeper level. I think the latter will really depend on what happens in Avengers: Endgame. Either way, between Captain Marvel, Endgame, and Far From Home… make mine Marvel.

Fox: Mark my words, it’s good time to love movies. 2018 was pretty damn special, and 2019 will be just as great in terms of pure entertainment, varied enough to satisfy all tastes. I could easily rattle off 20 or so films I think are going to be awesome, but I’m going to go with one that I feel has been produced rather quietly, given the talent and property: Men In Black International. This reboot/sequel reteams the comedic duo of Thor Ragnarok (I defy you to find someone who didn’t enjoy that romp) with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson stepping into the suits to battle aliens. And the on-screen talent only continues to impress from there with a cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible: Fallout), Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick). Couple that with director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious), and that equals a delicious recipe for success.

Stephon: Comic book films were fun in 2018, largely thanks to Marvel. The Avengers: Infinity War sequel is somewhere at the top of my list. I’m looking forward to seeing it for sure. Glass is another one I want to check out. I was a fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s take on the superhero’s origin in Unbreakable. Split was a welcome surprise as I was not expecting Split to be in the same universe as Unbreakable until Shyamalan delivered another good twist ending setting up the third film. I thoroughly anticipate the showdown between David Dunn, Mr. Glass, and The Beast in 2019.

I think the Baba Yaga might be making some Avengers wish they did go bye-bye in The Decimation. In 2019 the third chapter in the saga, John Wick 3: Parabellum will be released. I cannot wait for more action, murder, and mayhem, at the hands of John Wick.

Cam: Hmm I want to see all these movies. Glass, Spider-Man: Far From Home, John Wick 3: Parabellum. However, I cannot deny that my number one most anticipated movies of 2019 is…Well, it’s Avengers: Endgame isn’t it. I loved Infinity War and can’t wait to see what happens next. There’s not a lot I can say about the movie that people don’t already know, I’d be genuinely surprised if another movie does as well financially next year as Endgame. Surely we all want to see what happens next after Marvel’s version of The Empire Strikes Back last year.

Talk of Star Wars makes me feel like I should mention the biggest surprise for me as a huge Star Wars fan, it’s that Star Wars: Episode 9 doesn’t even make my top 5 most anticipated films of the upcoming year. And I think that’s the first time a Star Wars year has come along where I was not excited to see the movie that much. I’ll go see it anyway, possibly against my better judgment. But I just don’t think it’s going to satisfy me as a viewer, so I cannot get excited about it.

Doll: Way to end that on a downer, Cam! We’ll see you at the movies in 2019!

What are the films YOU are most looking forward to in 2019! Let’s discuss!
