Luke Cage Will Not Be Returning For A Third Season On Netflix

Fans of Marvel Comic’s characters have had a great few years enjoying characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Punisher on Netflix. It was all supposed to come together with The Defenders, which was not as great as audiences hoped it would be. Last week in not much of a surprise Netflix cancelled Iron Fist after it’s second season.

Today was the launch of the third season of Daredevil and in a surprising move according to Deadline, Netflix has announced that Luke Cage will not be returning for a third season. Marvel and Netflix released this statement:
“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

This announcement had event taken the writer’s room by surprise, which is under Cheo Hodari Coker, who had been working for a long time making scripts and taking notes for a third season as they thought that it was a given that a third season would be ordered.

According to their sources the cancellation of Luke Cage was caused due to creative differences as well as the inability for the parties to come up with a deal. Detailed drafts for the first half of a ten episode projected third season were delivered to Marvel and Netflix this week, which apparently some executives had issues with. There was already tension between them as Luke Cage’s writer’s room had recently been put on hold for a week as Marvel and Netflix tried to figure out a way to change their deal for the planned thirteen episode third season to a ten episode third season.

With these issues as well demands for change in creative leadership, Marvel and Netflix were unable to come up with a deal, leading to the cancellation of Luke Cage. For now there are no plans for Marvel to revive Luke Cage on the upcoming Disney streaming service. This leaves Netflix with Daredevil, The Punisher and Jessica Jones.
