A few months ago, Lupin co-creator, George Kay expressed his interest in a crossover between the gentleman thief and Sherlock Holmes while talking with Radio Times.
“The Arsene Lupin fanbase, which is evident within the show, would have to lock antlers with the Sherlock Holmes fanbase – you want to take it to a really meta level,” he explained. “Having that kind of level of fun would be really cool, and it’s not something we haven’t discussed.””
Fresh off the heels of part two’s nail-biting conclusion, I caught up with Omar Sy, star of Netflix’s Lupin during an AAFCA Roundtable and asked whether or not he’d be interested in crossing wits with Doyle’s detective and how he thought they’d get on.
“It’s going to be interesting because when you refer to the books, you have a kind of rivalry…British and French for a long time. They’re brothers, at the same time, they’re always fighting. That’s why when you have a soccer game, France/England, it’s always very important. So that’s why Lupin was created because you have Sherlock Holmes in England, they wanted to have something like that for France…So, why not go back and refer to the book and do something like that to expand the show and that’s what we want.”
Sy is referring to Lupin author, Maurice Leblanc’s 1906 crossover, Sherlock Holmes Arrives Too Late. The story sees Arsene Lupin lock horns with the detective. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes’ creator, later asserted a copyright claim over the character and Leblanc mockingly changed the name to “Herlock Sholmes.”

When Kay spoke with Radio Times, he added, ““Speaking really honestly, there have been discussions. There’s some ideas circling around that, that I have, that I’m really interested to explore.”

— Omar Sy (@OmarSy) May 11, 2021
While there’s been no official announcement from Netflix on a part 3, the show is a certified hit, reportedly having been streamed in 70 million homes in the first month it aired, making it the most streamed non-English show on the service. Sy responded to a French journalist stating that it was indeed coming. We’ll have to see how soon the team is interested in making this crossover happen.
