Mace Windu Lives! Possibly…

Things weren’t looking great last time we saw Jedi Master Mace Windu in The Revenge of the Sith. Betrayed by Anakin, he too lost an arm, then was blasted out a tall building’s window by the power of Emperor Palpatine’s force lightning. Not a great way to go… unless he didn’t go… Is Mace Windu still alive?

Samuel L Jackson, who portrayed the Jedi Master in all three prequel films, says Mace Windu is not dead! Jackson sent in a pre-recorded video message to the Star Wars 40th Anniversary panel at Star Wars Celebration this week. In it, he confirms that Mace Windu is still alive and kicking:

“While you’re all sitting there, I know you’re all in my corner on this, we know Jedi can fall from incredible heights and survive. So, apparently, I am not dead! Yes, I have two appendages right now, but we know the long and rich history of Star Wars characters reappearing with new appendages and being stronger and better than they ever were. Mace Windu is awaiting his return. Let’s make it happen.”

Jackson has been interested in reprising the role of Mace Windu for years, but this claim is actually semi-official. It was shown at a Star Wars event full of news relating to future projects, as well as a look back at what came before. The message had to have been approved in advance, so does that mean Windu survived the fall in official canon? And if so, will we ever actually see him again on the big screen, or will he simply appear in a novel or on Star Wars: Rebels? After all, there was no official announcement about where we would see Windu again aside Jackson’s video.

I personally would rather not see him return in the films, because if he does that means we’re returning to the prequel era or not long after that, perhaps the least interesting part of the Star Wars timeline. Maybe… maybe if they make that Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie everyone is pining for, and he appears in that, then I would be interested. Otherwise, Windu can stay dead and I’m just fine with that.

Would you want to see the big-screen return of Mace Windu? Or do you think he would be better served somewhere else in current Star Wars canon? Or are you done with him too? Let us know in the comment section below!
