MacGruber. The man, the myth, the legend.
For the uninitiated, MacGruber was a series of sketches on SNL over a decade ago starring Will Forte. As the parodied name suggests, MacGruber could make anything out of simple household materials. Yet, he failed to unarm the bomb in every sketch. I believe this was also once a super bowl Pepsi commercial.
In 2010, MacGruber was released as a feature film. Forte returned as title character, with a cast including Kirsten Wiig as Vicky and Val Kilmer as the villainous Cunth.
I saw the film first at a test screening in LA and did not appreciate the stupid humor. But, when I watched the film early this year, I better understood the brilliance behind the seemingly dumb jokes.
Well, in case you missed it, MacGruber is returning as a streaming show on Peacock, shooting this June.
Forte went on Late Night With Seth Myers to tease the “prestige” version of the beloved character, saying:
We wanted it to be a little classier with this next iteration of MacGruber.
To make his point, Forte shared part of his script featuring himself and Wiig’s Vicki. Ending by saying:
“That’s the softer MacGruber.”
