In a new interview star Anthony Mackie hints that Sam is not the hero to lead the Avengers, citing his lack of superpowers. I suppose when it comes to Avengers level threats, you need some muscle? However Cap was a de facto leader, despite being way less powerful (at the time) than Thor, Hulk or even Iron Man? Either way, Mackie sounded doubtful when it came to the question of whether his Cap can lead the Avengers? Here is a transcript from the latest Empire Magazine.
“Sam is the only character without superpowers. He’s just a regular dude hanging out with a bunch of weirdos. Being from New Orleans, I’ve been in a few fights. And heart and charisma never helped me in a fight. That usually just got me beat up. So that might cause an issue when you go fight somebody like Thanos.”
Well, Sam is not the only character without superpowers, we also have Hawkeye, Yelena, and others. Sam though of course was not some hand to hand combat expert, when Steve met him he was a counsellor. Then again, Scott Lang was working in Baskin Robbins and robbing old folks at night?
However, I’d argue that so far Mackie the actor hasn’t hit the heights of being the lead in an Avengers movie. It’s not so much that Sam cannot lead those movies and more Mackie himself. Donlt get me wrong I like Mackie, but I haven’t loved all projects with him as a lead. I guess Cap 4, (New World Order) will be the movie to finally answer that question for us. Personally I’ve said many times I believe it was a mistake to not have Sam get the Supersoldier Serum so he could be Cap (Steve) 2.0. Most fans disagree with me though, so there’s that. Though, I will say that Sam now has a Vibranium flying suit, which is cool, I guess?

Yesterday we covered a rumor (see related section) around Tom Holland being the lead in The Kang Dynasty. I said in that article that the only two I could see leading that movie were Holland or Cumberbatch. That’s as of right now though and things could change. I would have absolutely said Boseman as well had he not tragically lost his life. However, outside of those I don’t feel any of the other characters are ready to lead an ensemble movie. Maybe I will change my mind after watching New World Order, or The Marvels, or Fantastic Four, Blade etc?
Do you agree with Anthony Mackie, is Sam not the hero to lead the Avengers? Am I being harsh on some of the actors when I gave such a small list of who I think can lead a massive movie? As always, leave any thoughts below.
