Malcolm D. Lee Is Very Confident with Space Jam: A New Legacy

Space Jam: A New Legacy - Malcom D. Lee

Malcolm D. Lee never thought his directing career would eventually lead to Space Jam: A New Legacy.

It’s been twenty-five years since the original Space Jam movie that featured one of the all-time basketball greats Michael Jordan playing alongside the Looney Tunes characters.

Now, the future basketball great LeBron James takes his turn on the court with the Looney Tunes in a whole new story in the sequel.

Here’s the synopsis:

Welcome to the Jam! NBA champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny with the animated/live-action event Space Jam: A New Legacy from Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter. This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny, and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.

In a discussion for the upcoming cast reunion of The Best Man with a small group of reporters that LRM Online’s Gig Patta in attendance, Malcolm D. Lee addressed the upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy briefly.

“It’s probably the coolest movie I’ve ever done. Honestly, when I saw the editor’s cut, this movie’s going to be fantastic. I never say that. I never say that early on. It’s being optimistic,” said Lee on the confidence of this movie.

Although the trailer was recently released, Lee is still tweaking the final cut of the movie, which will be his masterpiece.

He continued, “By the way, there was a movie in there somewhere with the editor’s and even a director’s cut being too long. You built this big, block of marble that had to be chiseled. That said, this is going to be fantastic. I really liked the movie and cared about the characters. It’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot to like about it.”

Of course, jokingly, I remarked to Malcolm D. Lee by saying, “I still like Michael Jordan better,” which generated plenty of laughs.

Lee doubled down on the sequel by saying, “I challenge you to watch the movies back to back and see which one is better.”

Well, challenge accepted.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is in theaters and streams on HBO on July 16.
