One of the most bizarre films I’ve watched was with Quentin Dupieux’s horror comedy Rubber about a spare tire that goes on a serial killing spree across the desert by blowing up people’s heads with its psychic powers. Now Dupieux is back with another outrageous film with Mandibles, but appearing to more comedy than horror.
Here’s the official synopsis of Mandibles:
When simple-minded friends Jean-Gab and Manu find a giant fly trapped in the boot of a car, they decide to train it in the hope of making a ton of cash.
The cast includes Gergoire Ludig, David Marsais, Adele Exarchopoulos, India Hair, Romeo Elvis, Coralie Russier, and Bruno Lochet.

“As I finish editing Deerskin, I realized that all my films are comedies profoundly tormented by death,” Quentin Dupieux said in a statement. “My work will always be permeated by the same obsessions, the same ‘signature,’ the same sense of humor. From the beginning, I felt I was ploughing a furrow that was entirely my own: deformed realities, infinitely twisted human relationships, surrealist portraits of our society, profound and childish fantasies. With Mandibles, which fits the furrow perfectly, I’m finally abandoning death to focus on life.”
This is a remarkable turn for the director that is known for comedic deaths since his 2010’s debut with Rubber. Since then, he directed Wrong, Wrong Cops, Reality, Keep An Eye Out, and Deerskin.
It sounds like this time around the story is about playfulness, sincere comedy, and friendship. Of course, in a backdrop of a fantasy film with a giant fly as the pet that unites everyone together.
