It has been reported, and confirmed that María Gabriela de Faría will play The Engineer in Superman: Legacy. Initially reported by Deadline, the news was later confirmed by Legacy’s director James Gunn on social media.
‘María Gabriela de Faría, the Venezuelan actress best known for roles in Fox comedies Animal Control and The Moodys, has landed a breakout part on the film side, joining the cast of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.’
‘Her character is Angela Spica aka The Engineer. Part of the Warner/DC flick’s villain team, Angie’s powers stem from nanotechnology built into her body. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, she’s the second DC character to bear the name of The Engineer and was first introduced in The Authority vol.1 #1 in 1999.’
This may indicate that The Engineer, and The Authority group are villains in Superman: Legacy.
The initial post from the trade said this was a villainous role. However, the title was changed after Gunn posted this response on Instagram.
““Villain” is such a disparaging term!Welcome to the DCU @thefaria, who is not only a wonderful actor, but she laughs in person even more than she does in her IG photos! #theengineer #supermanlegacy #dcstudios”
Would it perhaps be more fair to use the term antagonist here as opposed to villain? Without seeing the script for the movie who can say for certain. One character who may not begin as a villain, but will surely become one is Lex Luthor. For now, that is a role that remains to be cast. Or, it has been cast and the news just hasn’t broken yet?
Hopefully we will get the name for Luthor soon, outside of that I’m not sure what other roles are left to be cast. Superman: Legacy should begin filming early 2024, and will hit theatres on June 11, 2025.
It” be interesting to see how the movie shapes up and what little leaks we get during production in the new year.
What do you think as it’s confirmed that María Gabriela de Faría will play The Engineer in Superman: Legacy? As always, leave your thoughts below.
