Yes, we’re back to this again. After weeks of back-and-forth between Martin Scorsese and plenty of other creatives either agreeing with his comments about Marvel movies not being cinema, we now have some new comments from him when talking with the outlet Entertainment Tonight.
In this new interview, Scorsese seemingly backpedals on his earlier comments, instead saying the Marvel movies are somehow a different artform. Take a look at his comments:
“Well, look, the point is, in terms of this film, Netflix, theaters, what I’m talking about really are films that are made. Let’s say a family wants to go to an amusement park, that’s a good thing, you know. And at themes and parks there’s these cinematic expressions. They’re a new art form. It’s something different from films that are shown normally in theaters, that’s all.”

Hmm…That certainly seems to be a backpedal from what he said before, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. While I don’t agree that Marvel movies aren’t cinema, I do think they have changed the way they consume movies, and somehow straddle the line between short-form and long-form storytelling, so I can see an argument in that way, even if I don’t quite grasp the amusement park aspect.
