Netflix continues to have trouble negotiating with the mainstream theater chains. It’s been fighting hard to change all the rules and red tape that have been in place, but it’s had one hell of a time actually succeeding, more often than not settling for limited releases for even their Oscar fare. It looks like this ongoing conflict between them and the theaters has claimed another casualty.

According to THR, not even Martin Scorsese’s name was enough to urge theaters and Netflix to come to some sort of agreement that would allow his new film, The Irishman, to play wide across the country. Apparently, Netflix has opted to make the film available to its subscribers sooner rather than later.

As such, The Irishman will open in select theaters on November 1, 2019, and 26 days later, on November 27, it will pop onto Netflix. This is similar to what happened with Roma last year. However, in spite of its Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film wins, it didn’t win Best Picture, and some believe the lack of box office performance is to blame.

As such, Netflix and Scorsese tried to open talks with theaters, in hopes that the star-studded film would get the wide release needed to succeed fully. Sadly, it sounds like talks have ultimately broken down.
