The Marvel Universe is about to enter a new era—and with the Avengers sidelined, the X-Men are stepping up to become Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
During the Marvel Comics: Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced Maximum X-Men, a brand-new ongoing series from writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel. The title spins directly out of the events of Avengers: Armageddon and will see Storm assemble a powerhouse roster of mutants to defend a world left without its traditional heroes.
The announcement came alongside additional details about Chip Zdarsky’s upcoming Avengers relaunch, which explores a Marvel Universe forever changed after the devastating crossover event. While the Avengers regroup following the global fallout of Armageddon, the X-Men find themselves taking center stage.

Storm Leads a New Generation of Heroes
At the heart of Maximum X-Men is Storm, fresh off her recent tenure with the Avengers, as she recruits an elite strike force capable of handling threats on a global and even cosmic scale.
The inaugural lineup includes:
- Storm
- Wolverine
- Colossus
- Bishop
- Iceman
- Psylocke
- Firestar
- Justice
Marvel describes the team as “Mutants by birth, heroes by choice,” emphasizing that these heroes are no longer simply protecting mutantkind, they’re defending the entire planet.
Their first mission is anything but small.
The series opens with an invasion from the Negative Zone, forcing the newly assembled team to confront an interdimensional threat that may be even more dangerous than Annihilus himself.

Christopher Yost Returns to the X-Men
Maximum X-Men marks Christopher Yost’s return to the mutant corner of the Marvel Universe after helping define several acclaimed X-Men stories during the 2010s.
Speaking during the Comic-Con panel, Yost said the new title embodies everything he loves about superhero comics.
“I’ve worked on my fair share of X-Books over the years, but Maximum X-Men is everything I love about comics rolled into one, it’s underdog heroes saving the world from the biggest Avengers-level threats imaginable, it’s mind-breaking action and drama and everything people expect from X-Men, all with a classic Claremont vibe.”
Yost added that launching the series in the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon creates the perfect opportunity to showcase why the world needs a team like this.
He also praised his collaborator, calling it a thrill to work alongside legendary artist Tony S. Daniel.
Tony S. Daniel Brings the Team to Life
Artist Tony S. Daniel, who recently returned to the X-Men franchise with Jed MacKay’s X-Men, said Maximum X-Menfulfills a lifelong dream.
“The X-Men have long been my favorite characters since discovering Giant-Size X-Men #1 in the fourth grade. I’ve always dreamed of working on my favorite characters, so it’s an incredible honor to launch Maximum X-Men with Chris.”
Daniel also revealed that the first issue captures the same energy that drew him to the X-Men as a child, promising readers a classic feel while introducing a bold new chapter for Marvel’s mutant heroes.
A New Era for Marvel’s Heroes
The announcement reinforces Marvel’s larger publishing initiative following Avengers: Armageddon. As previously revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, the crossover will dramatically reshape the Marvel Universe, with public opinion turning against superheroes and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes left fractured in the aftermath.
That vacuum creates an opportunity for the X-Men to become the world’s premier superhero team, placing Storm and her allies at the forefront of Marvel’s next publishing era.
Marvel also unveiled Tony S. Daniel’s cover for the debut issue and teased that more details about Maximum X-Men will be revealed in the coming months.
Before the new series launches, readers can experience the events that reshape the Marvel Universe in Avengers: Armageddon, which is available now at local comic shops.
