Finally we know who will be playing Simon Williams in the MCU as Marvel casts their Wonder Man in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The star, as you likely already know, has already made the jump into the superhero world. YAMII plays Black Manta in Aquaman and the upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Additionally Abdul-Mateen II also played Dr. Manhattan in the Watchmen series, which was excellent. However, Deadline is reporting that YAMII will become Simon Williams in the Wonder Man show coming to Disney+. Check it out.
Coming off of some of the best reviews of his career for his work in Broadway’s revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Suzan Lori Parks play Topdog/Underdog, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is preparing to move over from DC to Marvel as the lead for the studio’s Disney+ series Wonder Man.
The live-action Wonder Man series was first announced as entering development in June, with Shang-Chi helmer Destin Daniel Cretton and Hawkeye co-producer Andrew Guest both announcing their involvement. Cretton will direct and exec produce, with Guest serving as head writer. As previously announced, the show will see the return of Oscar winner Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery — the supervillain- turned-good guy otherwise known as The Mandarin who appeared in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi.

As you know, the fact this is now being reported by the trades means it’s a done deal. There were rumors that a former DC actor would be taking on the role in the MCU and fans began speculating wildly about that. Clearly the rumors were true, but now I’m guessing Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has signed on the dotted line.
I must admit I don’t know all that much about Wonder Man as a character. Far as I know he’s not that new, but I must have just never come across him in my comic book reading days. I like getting introduced to certain characters fresh as they appear in the MCU. Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Mighty Thor, and soon to arrive Riri Williams have all been fresh for me, so far I have enjoyed them all.
