According to the latest Barside Buzz Marvel are reportedly still searching for their Spider-Man 4 director. For no particular reason I think most fans assumed Jon Watts would be back for another trilogy. Yet, apart from some old rumors we have little to base that on. The information comes from Daniel RPK‘s Patreon and he also says not to rule out Watts.
However, Watts is only one of the names Marvel and Sony are considering. According to the rumor, another is Drew Goddard.
Goddard was the original showrunner on Daredevil Season 1 and then he left to pursue some projects that didn’t pan out. Though one of those projects (and the main reason for jumping ship) was to develop Sony’s Sinister Six movie. As we know that project was canned and Sony kinda started their universe again, badly, with Venom. Spider-Man himself has been rented out to Marvel and that Sinister Six project is long gone.
However, perhaps there were elements of the pitch Goddard had which impressed both Sony and Marvel? Equally, it would be hard to easily walk away from Jon Watts. Watts Spider-Man trilogy is up there are one of the most successful trilogies for a character in the MCU alongside Iron Man. The last movie being the most celebrated and biggest selling of the three. Watts is also in the final stretch of post-production on Skeleton Crew which he is producing for Lucasfilm. Ergo, one may assume he will be free again by the time cameras roll on Spider-Man 4.

It’s interesting and I like the fact Marvel and Sony are exploring their options. Many different directors will have different ideas of how to frame the plot. Therefore, it may be advantageous for Spider-Man to have a different voice for a new trilogy of college years movies.
For now we will just have to wait and see how this plays out. Holland indicated he’s still in talks for the fourth movie. My guess is he has a contract, but that contract allows him some approval of pitches and scripts. Business wise, we hear Spider-Man 4 should be set to begin filming sometime this year. And no, it’s completely normal for a movie in development to not have a director yet. Sony and Marvel are not hiring a writer/director, but a director for a script written by someone else. My guess is that they are 90% on where Spider-Man 4 will go and now need to find the right creative to make it happen.
So, Marvel are reportedly still searching for their Spider-Man 4 director. Who would you want to see next? Watts, Goddard or someone you think would be even better? Thoughts below as always.
