Marvel Comics used its Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con to pull back the curtain on the next era of the Marvel Universe, revealing how the fallout from its current crossover event will reshape Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and set the stage for several major ongoing series.

Writers Chip Zdarsky and Joshua Williamson shared new details about the conclusion of Avengers: Armageddon, the climactic chapter of Captain America, the second arc of the upcoming Avengers series, and an ambitious new direction for Iron Man that will lead directly into the character’s milestone 700th issue.

Avengers: Armageddon Changes the Marvel Universe

The current Avengers: Armageddon storyline has already pushed the Marvel Universe to its breaking point. General Thunderbolt Ross, once again operating as the Red Hulk, launched a campaign across Europe with an army of gamma-powered soldiers in an attempt to “spread democracy.”

Although the Avengers intervened despite opposition from the United Nations, the conflict spiraled into disaster when David Colton, a former Captain America empowered by mysterious Origin Boxes, engaged Red Hulk in a devastating battle that left widespread destruction in its wake.

The aftermath has already begun to fracture public trust in superheroes. Red Hulk has been taken into Russian custody by the Winter Guard, while Tony Stark has discovered dangerous technology capable of revealing possible futures.

According to Zdarsky, the final issue will introduce a game-changing concept that will redefine the Marvel Universe moving forward.

“In Avengers: Armageddon, we’re about to introduce something huge, that will set the scene for the future of the Marvel Universe,” Zdarsky said during the panel. “I know how that sounds but trust me: it will.”

The story reaches its conclusion in Avengers: Armageddon #5, where the world turns against superheroes and David Colton must confront the consequences of wielding immense power. The issue will directly lead into November’s launch of The Avengers #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.

Steve Rogers Faces the Battle for Hell

Marvel also previewed the explosive finale of the current Captain America storyline.

Before the events of Avengers: Armageddon, Steve Rogers confronted Red Hulk and was left in a coma. His soul was dragged into Hell, where an unlikely alliance with Victor Von Doom has placed him at the center of a supernatural civil war against Mephisto.

Steve’s acts of heroism have inspired an army of redeemed souls to rise alongside Doom, prompting Mephisto to unleash his own forces, including Red Skull, to stop them.

Zdarsky hinted that Captain America #16 could permanently alter Hell itself.

“Steve Rogers gets the chance to redefine Hell. Easy.”

However, Marvel also teased that Steve may have aligned himself with the wrong side as the battle for Hell’s throne reaches its conclusion, with consequences spilling back into the living world.

A New Avengers Team Emerges

Following the destruction caused by Avengers: Armageddon, Marvel confirmed that a brand-new Avengers lineup will assemble in The Avengers #1.

The initial roster includes:

• Spider-Man
• Wolverine
• Captain Marvel
• Daredevil
• Luke Cage
• One mystery member whose identity remains redacted

Marvel is keeping details about the opening storyline closely guarded, but the publisher did reveal the title of the book’s second arc: “The Red Line.”

A teaser image featuring a cracked Punisher skull suggests Frank Castle may play a significant role in what’s to come. Zdarsky offered only a brief tease. “All I’ll say is Frank Castle is fun to write.”

Tony Stark Heads to Prison

Meanwhile, Joshua Williamson revealed a dramatic new direction for Iron Man beginning this December.

After battling Madame Masque and a reimagined version of A.I.M., Tony Stark finds himself increasingly viewed as one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest dangers. As powerful new technology spreads into the wrong hands and Stark’s behavior grows more reckless, Iron Man ultimately ends up incarcerated inside the high-security prison known as The Vault.

The storyline, titled “The Incarcerated Iron Man,” begins in Iron Man #12 with artwork by Carmen Carnero.

Williamson described the arc as the culmination of everything the series has been building toward.

“‘The Incarcerated Iron Man’ is the story we’ve been building to since Iron Man #1. Tony has accepted his role as the Marvel Universe’s most dangerous hero and believes the Vault is the safest place for him to be, but that also means he’s locked up with some of his greatest enemies.”

The writer added that the mystery surrounding Tony’s imprisonment transforms the series into “a high-stakes thriller.”

Road to Iron Man #700

Marvel also announced an expanded publishing schedule for Iron Man.

Beginning with Iron Man #12, the title will ship twice monthly through March 2027 as it builds toward the landmark Iron Man #700.

The series will alternate between two interconnected storylines:

• Even-numbered issues will follow Tony Stark’s imprisonment inside The Vault, illustrated by Carmen Carnero.
• Odd-numbered issues will shift focus to “War Machines,” starring James “Rhodey” Rhodes as he assembles a new armored strike team to battle Madame Masque, Adam Ware, and the new A.I.M., with artwork by Gleb Melnikov.

Williamson said the expanded format allows both stories to unfold simultaneously while accelerating the journey toward the anniversary issue.

The Next Era Begins

Marvel made it clear during the panel that Avengers: Armageddon is more than just another crossover event. The publisher is positioning it as the catalyst for sweeping changes across several flagship titles, with the collapse of public faith in superheroes, the formation of a new Avengers team, Steve Rogers’ supernatural war in Hell, and Tony Stark’s imprisonment all converging to define the next chapter of the Marvel Universe.

Readers can follow the fallout throughout the summer before the next era officially begins with The Avengers #1 this November.
