For years, we’ve. known at least the next handful of Marvel Studios films on the horizon. However, with Phase 3 ending, that era is coming to an end. Sure, we know we’ll be getting a third Guardians of the Galaxy film and another Spider-Man flick, but beyond that, the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond 2019 is kind of a big question mark. Which old heroes will stick around and which new ones will pop up?
In a surprising move, it looks like one superhero we can look forward to is Kamala Khan, a.k.a Ms. Marvel. A new press release from Movie Casting Call confirmed this, saying:
Marvel Studios / Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is now casting a female actress to portray the role of Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan. This character is an American Muslim from Jersey City, New Jersey, and will star in a new stand-alone film “Ms. Marvel” to go into production next year. The character will be “comic book accurate”.
So from the looks of this, the studio is starting casting for Ms. Marvel right now, in hopes of beginning production next year, which would presumably mean we could get a 2020 release date. But what will this standalone film entail?
Given the source material, I see something in the vein of Spider-Man: Homecoming, except replace Spidey with Kamala and Stark with Captain Marvel — and I’d be on board with that. In terms of the reliability, Movie Casting Call is an industry site that’s usually pretty reliable. Honestly, I only see this being “inaccurate” if plans at Marvel Studios change, which is always possible (there’s a reason they haven’t announced anything yet — they don’t want to look stupid if plans change).
