Marvel Studios Controlling Reputation Is Undeserved Says Nia Da Costa

Marvel Studios controlling reputation is undeserved says The Marvels director Nia Da Costa. Back when the MCU was new Marvel garnered a reputation for being overly controlling on their projects. The most famous case was probably when Edgar Wright left Ant-Man for creative differences. However are Marvel Studios really more controlling than say WB? We hear about constant studio intervention on DC movies or at least we did until recently. Marvel themselves have also grown I think more trusting and willing to take risks with filmmakers visions.

However, there may sometimes be occasions where Kevin Feige has to make a decision that a director’s vision is not right for the MCU. Sometimes that happens before hiring them if things go well, but sometimes it happens afterwards. However, it’s those ones we always hear about publicly. So when The Marvels director appeared on Films To Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein podcast, Da Costa said the following with regards to Marvel Studios controlling reputation.

“It’s just been a really gratifying experience, it’s probably the best experience I’ve had with a studio entity or just any kind of Big Brother entity. And for it to be with Marvel, which kind of… I think is kind of scapegoated in the industry- Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you know, they control everything,’ and it’s like, well, they actually are really open and receptive and, like, hire you because they want you to be you. So it’s been really fun in that way.”

At the end of the day, if things go well, the studio love the director and their vision, then they’ll love Marvel. We fans just have to accept that sometimes it does not work out. Additionally that so far Feige has steered this ship well as its captain.

Do you think Marvel Studios controlling reputation is undeserved? Or, instead do you think the Mouse is trying to control the whole world one MCU movie at a time? Thoughts below.
