Marvel Studios May Have Found Their Shang-Chi Director

With Black Panther hitting theaters last year and Captain Marvel hitting theaters this past weekend, Marvel Studios has made it clear that they are finally opening up the Marvel Cinematic Universe to different perspectives. As those films have shown, there is plenty of money to be made in giving different audiences representation, and I’m sure that’s made things that much easier to go forward with the impending Shang-Chi film.

Deadline is reporting that the studio is settling on a director for their first Asian protagonist, and that director is Destin Daniel Cretton who helmed films like The Glass Castle and Short Term 12. Additionally, their most recent film, Just Mercy, is in post-production. I’ll admit, I’ve never seen any of these director’s films before (in true Marvel Studios style, they seem to be going for a director who’s done comparatively low-key films in the past), but I’ll certainly have to take a look at them in the near future. For now, you can take a look at one of his trailers below.

Word has it Marvel Studios was looking for a director who wants to do something of the level of Black Panther. So, pretty much a film that is a monolith of cultural importance that manages to gross over $1 billion at the box office. No pressure or anything, right?

Shang-Chi is currently being written by Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham, who also worked on the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and is attached to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 — so it seems like the movie is in pretty solid hands.

What do you think of this choice of director? Have you seen any of Cretton’s other films? Let us know down below!
