Marvel Unveils Star Wars Black History Month Variant Covers

Marvel’s Black History Month Celebration Expands to a Galaxy Far, Far Away with Star Wars Variant Covers

In a celebration of Black History Month, Marvel Comics is set to launch a new series of Star Wars Black History Month Variant Covers in the coming year. Renowned artist Ken Lashley takes the helm, crafting five covers that pay homage to beloved heroes from various eras of the Star Wars franchise. Lightsabers ablaze and blasters in hand, these depictions showcase the strength and inspiration embodied by these iconic characters, gracing the pages of Marvel’s Star Wars comic series each week throughout February.

The spotlight this year will shine on the following characters:

  1. Mace Windu: The revered Jedi and member of the Jedi High Council, known for his epic feats throughout the prequel trilogy. Mace’s cover will debut on the inaugural issue of his new solo limited series, set to launch in February. The series, written by Marc Bernardin and illustrated by Georges Jeanty, promises to unveil a perilous mission undertaken by Mace before his introduction in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
  2. Adi Gallia: Another respected Jedi Master who sat alongside Mace on the High Council. Adi’s fierce battles during the Clone Wars have been depicted across various media, including video games, comic books, and television series.
  3. Kawlan Roken: The brave leader of an underground network dedicated to aiding surviving Jedi during the rule of the Galactic Empire. Roken, who made his debut in last year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, will make his first-ever cover appearance.
  4. Bell Zettifar: A young Jedi from the High Republic era, whose journey with the Force from apprentice to full Jedi Knight has been chronicled in Star Wars’ High Republic publishing, including novels and Marvel’s High Republic comic series.
  5. Captain Panaka: The loyal protector of Queen Amidala, remembered for his dedication during the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo, as seen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Editor Mark Paniccia expressed his excitement, stating, “I’ve worked with and known Ken for a long time. He’s one of the best comic book artists in the industry and one of my favorite cover artists. He brings energy and dynamism to every cover, and this variant program is no exception. I’m excited for fans to see these characters illustrated in Ken’s powerful style.”

Ken Lashley, an avid Star Wars fan, enthusiastically shared his sentiments, saying, “I am a huge Star Wars fan, so when Mark asked if I would be interested in drawing these covers, it was a fast ‘HECK Yeah.’ These five covers have all the bases covered, characters we all love and know along with a few surprises for the fans. I love what I do, and getting to draw every day on creations that I loved growing up is a dream come true… Purple lightsabers are all over my office–haha.”

Fans can catch a glimpse of all five covers and grab their copies at local comic shops throughout February. For more information, visit Marvel.com.
